A simpler and more serene life is something we have all probably wished for at one point. While you might not be able eliminate all forms of stress in your life, you can create an environment at home that is more relaxing. One way to start is by turning to Zen-inspired design to create an oasis of tranquility in your home.

There are five main components to Zen interior design:

Symmetry—Align the room’s furnishings to draw your eye to the focal point of the room, whether it is simply a lovely rice paper screen or a fantastic view.

Clean lines—You want your living space to have an open, airy feel, and that is where low, clean-lined furniture comes into play.

Neutral colors—Relaxation is key, so focus on warm, earthy, neutral colors that won’t stand out or be distracting. Even the flooring can reflect this.

Natural materials—Incorporate natural elements, such as a water fountain, bamboo plants and wood containers, to keep the focus on materials that are native to the earth.

An absence of clutter—Less is more in a Zen styled room, so eliminate any unnecessary items and keep decorative objects and pictures to a minimum. Any knick-knacks should also adhere to the same philosophy of neutral colors and natural materials. Consider built-in or concealed storage for items you need or simply can’t part with.

The end result should be a room that is soothing and peaceful. Focus on quality, not quantity, when it comes to the room’s furnishings. With some thought, you can make any aesthetic a bit more Zen by following the five components above.
